Alloy-class Modular Lander

Original Date of Design:	25 Mar 2210
First Example Laid Down:	07 Nov 2210
First Example Completed:	30 May 2211
Fleets of Service: Civilian

The Alloy-class modular lander is a simple interface vehicle designed to transport large quantities of bulk cargo into orbit. It is shaped like a streamlined box, with a triangular nose section forward and engineering section and tail assembly aft. A structural framework that runs along the dorsal surface joins the nose and aft sections. Between these two sections and connecting to the framework is a large module for cargo. It is not possible to travel between the nose and aft sections.

The Alloy-class has a four-person crew consisting of pilot, co-pilot/sensors operator, loadmaster, and engineer. The pilot and co-pilot/sensors operator are located in the nose section while the loadmaster and engineer are in the aft engineering section. The craft is powered by an old commercial 10 MW MHD turbine which is connected to thrusters and vectored jets. Six hundred tons of thruster fuel is allocated and allows a fully loaded craft to achieve liftoff from a standard 1-G world.

The Alloy-class is made from inexpensive components and wrapped in a metallic hull. It was designed to be used in situations where catapults and rockets were not available or there is a requirement to bring large quantities of bulk cargo from orbit to surface. The standard cargo modules are 5 meters high by 10 meters wide, by 20 meters long. Modules may by switched, but the craft cannot fly without one due to structural requirements.

  1. Hull Hit Capacity has been determined using the formulas presented by KevinC on the 2300AD Mailing List on 10 Oct 1997, where the standard calculation has been modified by the use of the square root of the armor level instead of armor level to the first power. Therefore: Hull Hits = Material Volume * (Armor level)^(1/2). This makes more realistic hull hit capacities.

Amaray-class Landers

Original Date of Design:	05 Sep 2262
First Example Laid Down:	04 Jun 2263
First Example Completed:	08 Sep 2264
Fleets of Service: Foxx Industries, IMS

The Amaray-class lander is Foxx Industries' standard lander. Designed almost forty years ago, the Amaray-class has remained almost unchanged since the first example was laid down; a tribute to the craft and its designers.

The Amaray-class lander was conceived as a replacement for the various landers, shuttles, and space planes that the corporation used. The design requirements called for a medium cargo capacity lander capable of passenger service and able to perform multiple atmospheric landings before refueling. It also had to fit into the existing hanger decks of the Sarah Anna-class freighter and the new Pholeon-class modular freighter. Also, at this time, IMS was looking for an armored lander capable of landing platoon-sized units and providing limited air support.

A design team from one of Foxx Industries aerospace subsidiary companies, led by William Amaray, submitted a design hoping to capture both the IMS and general tender contracts. After slight modifications to the original design at the request of IMS, it was accepted. The design is simple in nature. A newly developed 1 MW MHD turbine (now coming into common military use) was selected for the power plant. Fuel tankage for three days of operation was provided, although extensive use of the laser can shorten this substantially. A basic rectangular hull was adopted, split into a front section for the crew and laser unit, and a rear, configurable cargo area. The crew has standard, cockpit life support but generally hook into the main unit, which is capable of sustaining fifty personnel for three days.

In order to satisfy IMS sensor requirements, passive, life, and cartographic sensors were added. The life and cartographic sensors were the most advanced sensors that could be emplaced in the lander. Navigational radar was standard equipment and the passive sensor was necessary for fire control purposes.

The Amaray (Mk.I)-class mounts a UTES jack turret containing a single Hyde Dynamics EA 122 laser, controlled by an advanced targeting computer. The entire jack turret assembly can be removed, allowing easy repairs and swap outs. The jack turret was deemed necessary to allow a high lift value for atmospheric landings. Advanced hull masking was utilized to reduce the radiated signature and armor was heavily applied to increase battlefield survivability.

The rear section of the lander contains 1120 m³ of cargo space. Access is provided by several cargo hatches; one in the roof, one in each side and a ramp/hatch at the rear, between the two combustion bells. Cargo capacity is limited to fifty passengers, 250 tons, or any combination of the two. The rear ramp/hatch can accommodate most vehicles.

The Amaray carries enough fuel to achieve lift-off under 3.5 Gs, even when fully loaded. When empty, this is equivalent to almost 7 Gs though computer control limits maximum acceleration to 6 Gs unless over-ridden. Though the lander is designated as being STVL (Short Take-off, Vertical Landing), some pilots find that on low-G worlds, they are able to perform vertical take- offs when empty due to the large amount of thrust available.

The lander, as mentioned above, is a STVL craft and is capable of landing on short runways or vertically. The usage of short runway landings is preferred from a fuel conservation standpoint, and this is the norm is conditions permit. However, if necessary, vertical landings can be undertaken. These are very useful for landing in small areas with restricted landing space. When fully loaded, a short runway is required to achieve lift-off, and the craft is fitted with stubby wings and a quasi-tail section to provide and increase aerodynamic lift.

The lander requires a crew of four; pilot, copilot/sensors operator, gunner, and loadmaster. Both pilot and copilot can pilot the ship, and the copilot and gunner can both control the laser and sensors; this allows limited redundancy in case of battle damage. The loadmaster mans the survey sensors in addition to looking after cargo and passengers. On the Mk. II (unarmed) version of the lander, the gunner assumes the duties of a second loadmaster/crew chief.

The Amaray-class landers are multi-purpose small craft with many applications. They are used universally by IMS for transporting troops and supplies to planet surfaces in both hot and cold landing zones. They are also used in vessel boarding actions, and can be found on all IMS SF starships. As well, most corporate freighters have bays to accept these landers and carry them frequently. The comprehensive sensor suite allows the lander to function in a limited mode as a survey craft.

The latest variant of the Amaray is the Mk. III, which is an armed version using the WDS-111 laser in place of the Hyde Dynamics EA 122 unit. The WDS-111 is a more compact weapon and lighter weapon produced by Foxx Industries through their subsiduary, Wombat Defense Systems. The Mk. I variant will no longer be produced and all Mk. I Amaray's will be upgraded to the Mk. III variant as part of routine maintenance and overhauls.

The Amaray-class lander has been patented directly by Foxx Industries. There have been several offers to build them under license by other companies outside of the corporation but these have been rejected. The craft is produced and used solely by the corporation and its subsidiary companies. The exact number of landers in existance is unavailable, but has been estimated to number several hundred. Current production is ten units per year, but is expected to increase to one unit per month in the near future. The lander is produced at the AusCan Consolidated orbital construction facilities located at Botany Bay (DM +33 2277/American Arm).

Bessel-class Mining Vessel

Original Date of Design:	02 Oct 2204
First Example Laid Down:	22 Jan 2206
First Example Completed:	17 Jun 2209
Fleets of Service: Civilian

The Bessel-class mining vessel was designed to be a base and processing station for non-surface mining activities. Similar to the larger OMS designed and built by Aberdeen Mining Corporation, but only a tenth of the length, the Bessel is built around a linear accelerator that is used for launching processed ore towards a collection point elsewhere in the system. The craft can be broken down into three main sections-linear accelerator, spin module, and hangers.

The linear accelerator is a large cylinder approximately 150 meters in length and 30 meters in diameter. The inner section of it is a 20-meter diameter hollow launcher that is the actual accelerator chamber. The outer hull houses the equipment necessary for the operation of the accelerator and various accessways for personnel and material conveyance.

The spin module is a 60-meter diameter cylinder that is 40 meters in length, with only the outer 10 meters being under spin. The spun section contains living quarters, common areas, bridge, mining coordination center, fuel tankage and processing equipment. The un-spun section contains more processing equipment, fuel tankage, and ore storage.

Hangers are provided for two Alloy-class modular landers and four CargoDevil- class material handers. The hangers are built around the intake section of the linear accelerator, with the lander hangers extending beyond the end of the accelerator. The lander hangers are designed so that the cargo modules can be emptied or filled from the hanger area into conveyance ways leading to ore storage.

Pholeon-class Modular Freighter

Original Date of Design:	08 Sep 2271
First Example Laid Down:	05 Mar 2273
First Example Completed:	01 Jul 2275
Fleets of Service: Foxx Industries, IMS

The Pholeon-class is Foxx Industries' heavy transport, modular freighter, produced by AusCan Consolidated at their Proxima Centauri shipyards. It is powered by a Proton Power Technologies 100 MW fusion reactor, which makes it one of the largest freighters in service in terms of power plants. A power plant of this size was deemed necessary to move the vessel, which when fully loaded, weighs almost 110,000 tons.

The bow, or nose section of the vessel contains the bridge, tactical action center, solary arrays, and a reconfigurable, internal cargo bay.

Aft of the nose are the hamster cages attached to a central shaft. Each habitat can house ninety crewmembers and other personnel, including a small sick bay and medical section. The hamster cages rotate in opposite directions to reduce the effects of torque.

To the rear of the spin habitats lie a section containing cargo space and two hanger decks, each housing a cargo manipulator craft, similar to the MidTech Cargo Devil. This section is placed to protect the spin habitats from damage when the cargo modules are being moved. Aft of this is the cargo area.

The cargo area consists of a central shaft onto which ten cargo modules in two rows of five can be attached. Air locks are present here to allow access to the module interiors, as are the anchoring equipment for the modules. Each module holds 1980 cubic meters of cargo. In lieu of cargo modules, two Amaray -class landers can be carried externally, attached to the cargo shaft.

The final, or aft section contains the engineering section, fuel tankage, fuel processing equipment, cargo space, and main hanger deck. The hanger deck is large enough to accommodate two Amaray-class landers at once. The cargo area is readily re-configured as required and can be converted to passenger space if required. Five thousand tons of fuel is stored on board the ship to refuel the small craft and other equipment. Fuel processing plants can convert ice and water to fuel as required.

As of 01 Dec 2300, there are several Pholeon-class vessels in service, including three used exclusively by IMS.

Sarah Anna-class Freighter

Original Date of Design:	02 May 2253
First Example Laid Down:	29 Apr 2255
First Example Completed:	05 Jun 2256
Fleets of Service: Foxx Industries, IMS, Civilian

The Sarah Anna-class freighter was named after Foxx Freight's ship sunk in the Twilight War and is the flagship cargo carrier of Foxx Industries.

The class uses a small fission power plant to power the stutterwarp drive. There are no other major power requirements and this gives the vessel moderate speed.

The Sarah Anna-class have one hanger deck capable of handling two Amaray Mk.II-class landers, which are the unarmed versions of the workhorse Amaray-class lander. These small craft have up to 1120 m³ of cargo space and can be refueled either at the planetary surface or from on-board fuel tankage. Two fuel processing plants and four solar arrays are used to crack water and ice for fuel.

The class has a medium sized cargo bay of almost 12,000 m³ which can be partitioned as required. Part of the cargo bay can be set aside for passengers and stewards, allowing the ship to be converted into a passenger liner on a temporary basis. To this extent, life support will support five hundred personnel for two hundred days.

The Sarah Anna can be converted into an ad hoc troop transport for IMS, as is the case with all corporate merchant vessels. However, as it is not armed or armored, it is usually put into convoys or battle fleets when used in this configuration.

As of 01 Dec 2300, there are over fifty Sarah Anna-class vessels in operation, including twelve in private use under the terms of the lease-purchase plan. IMS operates three vessels as transport and supply ships and four have been refitted as the Mk.VI for use as fighter tenders.
