Kuroda Nagamasa Class Frigate
|
|
The Kuroda Nagamasa class frigate makes up Japan's minor patrol and raiding force. The primary design was to be capable of taking on other small warships, such as the Manchurian Tunghu, Russian Tula, and French Aconit and standing an even or better chance of winning.
Frigates are not fleet ships, and are not generally assigned to the battleline. The whole point of the frigate is that they are capable of staying out in space unsupported a considerable length of time, and their simpler MHD Turbine/ Solar Panel arrangement is low maintenance and allows for extended cruising of periods upto 6 months. Fleet ships on the other hand are much higher maintenance and require significant bases and fleet trains to keep in fighting order. Some "frigates" (notably the German ones) are simply very small Fleet ships, and are not capable of independent cruising any more than other Fleet ships.
The Kuroda's taskings are general patrol duties, surveillance, minelaying, convoy escort and raiding. Her design has been optimized for these tasks.
The hull is 50m long and roughly 10m in diameter and composed of low profile synthetics. The hull is 80mm thick, enough for good structural integrity and military maneuvering, but only providing slight protection. Ships of this class can seldom afford the weight that significant armour protection costs.
The engine is a low maintenance 5MW MHD Turbine feeding a 1MW stutterwarp. The Turbine is usually dialed back to 1MW except when there is a need to power up the energy weapons. When inside the FTL shelf the MHD turbine is usually shut down and the solar panels deployed. This way the Kuroda can effectively cruise until her supplies run out, she need to leave a system or she closes down for battle.
Weapons systems are based around the Ritage missile that is standard for every Japanese warship except Sakurajima and Asahi, which have been refitted with the few available Ritage-2 missiles Japan has acquired from France. The Japanese love of heavy particle beam shows with a pair of small PBWS controlled by a single workstation (so they must fire at the same target). There are two laser turrets for defence, but unfortunately the ships design masks them from firing into the forward aspect.
Only four Kurodas have seen action so far in the Kafer War. Two vessels assigned to the 7th Division (2x Kurodas, ? and ?) were assigned to minelaying duties at Kimanjano in support of Japan's French allies and were caught laying Sentinels in the outer system be a Kafer Scout Group (of 4 Beta class Cruisers). They were utterly outclassed and destroyed in short order.
The other two frigates involved in battle were in the 10th Division, who were with 4th Combined Fleet (1x Suffren class Cruiser, 2x Soldat class Destroyers and 3x Kuroda Nagamasa class Frigates) at Joi.
Of the 15 remaining Japanese Frigates, 6 are currently in ordinary (i.e refit in the core), 3 are on the Japanese Arm with 4th Combined Fleet (but are in very poor order and due for recall), 4 are stationed on the Chinese Arm and 2 are at assigned to 1st Combined Fleet now warping out from Sol to assist in the final campaign to liberate Joi, and replacing the battered 4th Combined Fleet. They will act as scoutships, screening the main fleets moves and sacrificing themselves if necessary so that the main 5000 ton plus Fleet ships can make themselves battle ready.
