Beijing-class Battleship (BB)

Original Date of Design: 26 Apr 2261
First Example Laid Down: 11 Jul 2263
First Example Completed: 29 Sep 2265
Fleets of Service: Manchuria

History

The Beijing-class battleship was constructed in the 2260s. Small by current standards, the class was a potential threat in its day. By the time of the Central Asian War, the Beijing was outclassed by more modern designs of the Imperial French Navy and unable to make much of a showing in the interstellar portion of that conflict. Being the dominant power on the Chinese Arm, the space naval force of Manchuria has not had to expand or modernize at the same rates as the French and Americans.

Design

The Beijing-class battleship was designed to act as the flagship for Manchuria battle squadrons. As such, it has more extensive command and control facilities than lesser-classed vessels. The vessel contains a small detachment of Punyuang-class fighters and landers for use by the troop detachment carried aboard. All personnel are carried in hamster cages that are located internally, beneath the armored hull. There are three hanger decks; two contain landers and the third contains a detachment of fighters. The two lander bays may each carry two fighters in lieu of landers, bringing the total fighter compliment up to eight.

Engineering consists of a fission power plant and accompanying stutterwarp drive which provides a warp efficiency comparable to that of the Tunghu-class missile frigates. The hull is constructed of synthetic materials and is moderately armed with screens. Close defense consists of laser and particle accelerators in jack turrets. Offensive capability is present in the form of missile bays housing Fantan missiles, as well as the Punyuang fighters.

Therefore: Hull Hits = Material Volume * (Armor level)^(1/3). This makes more realistic hull hit capacities.

Tien Shan-class Cruiser (CG)

Original Date of Design: 09 May 2282
First Example Laid Down: 20 Nov 2285
First Example Completed: 31 Mar 2378
Fleets of Service: Manchuria

The Tien Shan-class cruiser was designed to supplement the Beijing-class battleship. It was constructed using current technology for the era, but like most Manchurian designs, is beginning to show its age. The ship is powered by a large fission plant that supplies power to the drive and the high-output energy weapons that comprise the primary armament of the class. A pair of missile bays was installed for Fantan missiles for long-range offensive capability. The cruiser carries a company of troops and two landers (use OLL-29 stats) to deploy them to the surface.

Shenyuang-class Gun Boat (GB)

Original Date of Design: 08 Sep 2271
First Example Laid Down: 05 Feb 2273
First Example Completed: 30 Mar 2375
Fleets of Service: Manchuria

The Shenyuang-class gun boat was designed in the 2270s to fulfill a system defense role. A simple design, the class can be found throughout the Chinese Arm, based in systems where there are Manchurian colonies.

The gun boat is armed with two masked turrets with high-output laser weapons and is heavily armored, making it a very survivable ship. There is a small security detachment that is used to conduct customs inspections and boarding actions. A small lander (use OLL-29 stats) is attached in a magnetic sling for use by the security detachment. The large engineering crew necessitated by the fission power plant provides personnel for prize crews if any merchants are taken into custody.

Punyuang-class Fighter (FTR)

Original Date of Design: 20 Mar 2299
First Example Laid Down: 30 Aug 2299
First Example Completed: 15 Oct 2300
Fleets of Service: Manchuria

The Punyuang-class fighter was constructed in 2300 as an inexpensive, stutterwarp capable, system defense fighter. Most components were purchased on the open market, including the LL-98 laser, which was heavily marketed by Guiscard in order to reduce unit costs. The fighter is generally based at orbital stations, although it is streamlined sufficiently to conduct operations from bases on the planetary surface.

When used for system patrol, the thruster fuel can be used to extend the operating time of the Punyuang to 24 hours, with a small reserve left over. As no extended accommodations are provided for the crew, missions lengths longer than 24 hours are rarely undertaken.

Sensor Package

Navigational: Navigational Radar; Military: Active sensors (range=7), Passive Sensors (range=6); Survey: none

Crew

Cockpits: 2 (Pilot, Weapons Officer)

Performance Characteristics

Warp Efficiency: 2.64; Power Plant: 3.0 MW MHD; Fuel: 12.1 tons, sufficient for 12 hours, plus 30.8 tons thruster fuel, sufficient for one interface trip at 0.95 G; Range: 7.7; Mass: 225.1 tons; Cargo Capacity: none; Hanger Decks: none; Comfort: 0 for crew; Total Life Support: 2 crew; Ordnance: none; Price: Lv 12,241,000

  2. Hull Hit Capacity has been determined using the formulas presented by KevinC on the 2300AD Mailing List on 10 Oct 1997, where the standard calculation has been modified by the use of the square root of the armor level instead of armor level to the first power. Therefore: Hull Hits = Material Volume * (Armor level)^(1/2). This makes more realistic hull hit capacities.
  3. The Punyuang-class fighter originally appear in the Naval Architect's Manual of the Star Cruiser boxed game. The design had several design flaws, as originally designed, namely an active sensor that consumed 100% of available power, and the exclusion of the cost of a targeting computer. This design is my corrected version of the original design.
  4. Only the Weapons Officer work station may benefit from the targeting computer. If the Pilot controls the turret, no targeting computer modifier may be applied.
